On March 23 and March 25, the Longview ISD Foundation’s Grants Giveaway surprised teachers, counselors, nurses and librarians with news that they had received funding for classroom projects through the fourteen annual Grants-to-Teachers Program. The Foundation funded 36 classroom grants totaling $43,338.02.

The Grant Giveaway also awarded five Campus Initiative Grants on those days totaling $14,146.00


Margaret Davis, James Brewer, Darrin Bickham, Linda Buie, Sarah Sheppard, and Brian Kasper, Longview ISD campus administrators, received funding for five Campus Initiative Grants from the Longview ISD Foundation for a total of $8,509.00.
 
Shirley Williams, Kris Vincent, and Pat Terrell, Longview ISD Foundation board members, award Tracey Wilson, McQueen Primary School, and Charlotte Munoz, teacher at South Ward Elementary School, a grant worth $1,748.81 for their grant titled "F.L.I.P—Filming Learning Increases Performance."
 
Shirley Williams, Kris Vincent, Jeanne Mann, and Pat Terrell award $1949.92 to Robert Holland, music teacher at South Ward Elementary School, for "Keyboards for Success."

Co-written with physical education teachers Debbie Wesson, South Ward Elementary School, and Karen Wilson, Johnston Elementary School, this grant will teach students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade at all three elementary schools to bowl, thus giving them a life-long sport. Students will also visit the bowling alley to actually bowl once they master the skills.

A reporter with CBS 19 interviews Karen Wilson, physical education at Johnston Elementary School, about her grant. Ms. Wilson has won several grants from the Foundation, including one that provided equipment to teach students golf and a lifesize chess game to teach students to play chess. Like her students, Ms. Wilson is a competitor!
 
While at Johnston Elementary School, Foundation board members learned how Barbara Briley uses the computer software "Study Island" that she received in 2008 through the first annual Campus Initiative Grant Program to improve students’ math skills.
 
Kristal Childs, first grade teacher at Bramlette Elementary School, received $709.50 with fellow teacher Sue Webster for their grant titled "Let's Get Buggy for Science."

Jeanne Mann, Lisa Baker, Brian Kasper, Rebecca Melton, Jill Littlejohn, and Marsha Dotson, Foundation board members, award $528.00 to Pat Webber, teacher at Judson Middle School, for her grant "Puppets Tell All."
 
First year science teacher at Judson Middle School, Kathlene Savage proudly received her grant co-written with Bill Russell, veteran science teacher, for Classroom Jeopardy. Together they received $873.45.

Jill Littlejohn, Jeanne Mann, Kim Shumaker, Longview High School assistant principal, Lisa Baker, Rebecca Melton, Marsha Dotson and Kay Ray, executive director of the Foundation, award a grant to Jeff Hull, art, ceramics and sculpture teacher at Longview High School, worth $1,234.00 for "Power Hand Tool Package." Mr. Hull has received numerous grants from the Foundation to improve instruction in sculpture and ceramics. His art students consistently win art competitions locally and at the state level, and the Foundation is proud to have provided equipment to help them succeed. Mr. Hull will also be honored at the 2009 Lamplighter Awards Banquet by one of his art students, Erin Jeffers, for his positive influence in her life.

This grant paired with a grant the teachers received from the Best Buy Corporation will improve labs for their biology students. The biology teachers at Longview High School have received a number of grants for science equipment from the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc.
 
Jeanne Mann pins a congratulatory ribbon on Kris Lester, the grant writer who collaborated with Longview High School English teachers. Together they received $1,770.00 for "Dancing with Education" to improve instruction in English and speech.

Mary Darby, Rebecca Melton, Marsha Dotson, and Kay Ray award a grant to Mattie Cuba, theatre arts teacher at Foster Middle School, and Carmen Hohlt, instructional technology specialist. They will receive $467.85 for a camera so that theatre students can make their own movies.
 
Mattie Cuba and Carmen Hohlt, Foster Middle School teachers, have won several grants from the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. Both teachers have also been honored by students at past Lamplighter Awards Banquets for their dedication to their students and their love of teaching.
