On March 2 and March 8, the Longview ISD Foundation’s Grants Giveaway surprised teachers, counselors, nurses and librarians with news that they had received funding for classroom projects through the fifteenth annual Grants-to-Teachers Program. The Foundation funded 19 classroom grants totaling $27,946.83.

The Grant Giveaway also awarded one Campus Initiative Grant on March 8 to J. L. Everhart Magnet School of International Studies for $5000.00.


Foundation members Katherine McCrory, Heidi Archer, Karen Reed, and Shirley Williams joined Dr. James Wilcox, LISD superintendent, and Micah Lewis, deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction, to award a classroom room to Marie Edwards, nurse at J. L. Everhart Magnet School of International Studies. Mrs. Edwards received $347.42 for her grant titled " Kids Learning to Eat Right for Life." Her grant will improve student nutrition and complement the campus grant Everhart received.
 
Dr. Carl Briley, principal of South Ward Elementary School, and Karen Reed, Foundation board member, congratulate Robert Holland, music teacher, for received a grant for keyboards. The Foundation has purchased many instruments for Mr. Holland's music program, and he is looking forward to using them all with students in his new music room in fall 2010.

Katherine McCrory, Heidi Archer, and Karen Reed congratulate Catherine Morgan, kindergarten teacher at Hudson PEP Elementary School. Mrs. Morgan, first grade teacher, received $678.00 for her grant "Hands on Activity Tubs for Science."

Amy Anderson, physical education teacher at Valley View Elementary School, is surrounded by her students after learning that she received $1,714.20 for her grant "Impacting Kids for a Lifetime." Mrs. Anderson also is excited about using her materials in a new gym next year. Mrs. Anderson has won several grants over the years from the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc.

Heidi Archer, Karen Reed, and Katherine McCrory congratulate Lee Stanton, fifth grade teacher at Valley View Elementary School for receiving $896.04 for "Snapshot Videos," a grant designed to improve science instruction for all students.
 
Katherine McCrory, Karen Reed, Shirley Williams, and Heidi Archer were as happy as Karen Wilson, physical education teacher at Johnston Elementary School, was when she learned that she won two grants. They are "Can You Hear Me Now?" for $1,576.00 and $1,967.40 for "Can Wii Do It? Yes, Wii Can!" Ms. Wilson will be able to get a microphone system and Wii's for her students. She was most excited about the Wii system so that students can experience sports like Alpine skiing.

Ms. Wilson is a very enthusiastic teacher who has won several grants so she can have the very best for her students.
 
Katherine McCrory, Heidi Archer, and Shirley Williams congratulate Barbara Briley, teacher at Johnston Elementary School, for receiving $714.00 for her grant "Maximizing Instruction to Maximize Learning." Mrs. Briley has also won several grants to help all students at Johnston Elementary School.

Rhonda Small, a fifth grade teacher at Johnston Elementary School, explains to her students how the books she received through her grant will be used for research in science. Mrs. Small received $713.90 for her grant titled "Science Through the Eyes of Our Students." Mrs. Small has received several grants in the past for science instruction.
 
Ginger Pritchard, Christi Shobert, and Bobbie Wilson were ecstatic when they learned the Longview ISD Foundation funded their grant titled "Cooking to Help Educational Foundation Skills" for a total of $1,326.26. These wonderful teachers teach special education at Doris McQueen Primary School.

Amber Johnston, literacy coach at Doris McQueen Primary School, was very excited to learn that she would be receiving flip phones to use with students in grades kindergarten through five. She received $1,189.00. She will be able to reach more students with this grant in 2010-2011 when the school becomes Johnston-McQueen Elementary School with the addition of classrooms being built now as part of the LISD building program.

Craig Varnell was very excited to receive $334.95 for his STEM initiative at Foster Middle School. His grant will enhance the robotics project at FMS. Here Mr. Varnell receives his grant ribbon from Nancy Morgan, Foundation board member.

Jeanne Mann, Kay Ray, and Kris Vincent presented a grant to Elizabeth Hall, physical education teacher at Forest Park Magnet School of Global Studies. Ms. Hall received $1,995.00 for her grant titled "Both Sides Up." She is very excited about using the equipment in Forest Park's new gym next year. Joining the group are Leisha Fluellen and Phyllis Dozier, administrators at Forest Park.
 
Jacquelyn Simpson, Jeanne Mann, and Kris Vincent presented Jerry Martin, Susan Merrill and Brandon Pigeon, science teachers at Longview High School, with $1,915.00 for their grant titled "Science Podcasts." Through this grant, parents will be able to go online to see students' labs, and even if students are absent, they can still see the lab and write a lab report.
 
Jacquelyn Simpson, Kris Vincent and Jeanne Mann presented Kay Weatherspoon, English teacher and department chair at Longview High School, with $1,994.85 in order to purchase quick check activity boards that can be used by all sixteen LHS English teachers. As a result, this grant will benefit every student at Longview High School since all students take four years of English.
 
Jacquelyn Simpson, Kris Vincent and Jeanne Mann surprised Jeff Hull, Pre-Advanced and Advanced Placement art and ceramics teacher, with $2,000.00 for his grant "MIG Welding Package Project." Mr. Hull has won numerous grants in order to provide the very best for LHS art students. Each year his students visit a local scrap dealer and hand pick scrap metal pieces for their original metal sculptures that they will paint and weld. Each year Mr. Hull has state winners with this project. Now he has the best welding equipment for his talented artists.

Jacquelyn Simpson, Kay Ray, and Kris Vincent presented Millie White, medical program instructor at Longview High School, with $2,000.00 for her grant titled "Scenario-Based Training and Skills Training." Ms. White is working with LHS students who are interested in pursuing a medical career.
 
Jeanne Mann and Kris Vincent presented Judson Middle School teachers Mindy Holley and Sheri Peery with funds to purchase electronic dictionaries for use in seventh grade language arts.
